Preparing for a possible pandemic
Doctors are currently galvanising their understanding and test-enactment of protocols which aim to address the many challenges that may face us in the event of an H5N1 pandemic.
Historically, however, medical doctors have been wrongly reassured by the fact that in past pandemics initial outbreaks have often been sporadic and also because, traditionally, there can be a lull of several months between consecutive phases.
We understand that this is not the profile that is expected of an HPAI pandemic instigated by H5N1 in the event that it becomes capable of human-to-human transmission, especially given the potential for rapid dissemination on account of modern methods of transport.
In addition medical doctors are very used to dealing with life-threatening situations and indeed with the seasonal epidemics which can claim numerous victims. |
This can lead to a degree of resistance to what can easily be interpreted as 'media frenzy' surrounding infectious outbreaks.
Pressing for more information
However we urge that in this instance, doctors seize every possible opportunity to press their academic, regulating and legislative bodies for as much reliable information as possible regarding every scientifically valid approach to preventing and treating infection with the H5N1 influenza A type virus.
Many medical doctors are currently poorly informed about non-vaccine, non-Tamiflu specialist approaches that may be of value in the prevention and treatment of Avian Flu.
The Alliance for Natural Health (www.anhcampaign.org) recently submitted a scientifically robust report to The World Health Organisation (WHO) containing 63 pages with over 250 primarily peer-reviewed publication citations on the potential role of natural products in the event of a pandemic. This is now available for review free of charge from their website.
In their estimation, the dismissal of natural products through inappropriate scepticism may result in the unnecessary loss of tens of thousands of lives.
The potential role of natural products
There is no question that there is no precedent to this current threat. It is therefore impossible to provide rigorous clinical trial data to support or reject the assertions of appropriately-qualified individuals or collective bodies as to the degree to which natural and complementary medicines may be of value in the event of a pandemic. This is also largely true about the data that exists about the possible pharmaceutical alternatives.
However natural products may indeed play a pivotal role in countering an Avian Flu pandemic.
With respect, we urge all doctors to note that the professionals making these recommendations are themselves medically-qualified or are working with medically-qualified individuals.
These doctors and PhD specialists simply have a post-graduate scientific base or work within clinical specialties which involve the use of natural products in the prevention and treatment of a number of conditions that have a complex immunological or virological basis.
Given the potential threat of Avian Flu it seems inappropriate not to consider the recommendations of these professionals simply because they fall outside the traditional medical training of the average doctor. It is just a different clinical specialism.
Justification for the use of natural products to support the immune system in an Avian Flu pandemic
We therefore urge doctors to read:
- The Alliance for Natural Health's Avian Flu Expert Committee Report available free of charge at www.anhcampaign.org
- Dr Concorde's book, available shortly
- Any other publications that may be of value in this regard.
Please note that Dr Concorde's book provides additional specialist angles, using an alternative approach, that are not included in the ANH report - but does not substitute for the ANH Report.
Please note also that through Dr Concorde's book - as well as through our online 'diagnostic service' - The Concorde Initiative will be recommending that select members of the general public visit their doctors to optimise through traditional and pharmaceutical means certain aspects of their health that may be key factors in their possible risks in the event of an infection with H5N1.
Dr Concorde's book will contain a detailed explanation of the molecular biology that is relevant to the pathogenesis of H5N1-induced infection and related scientific considerations.
We hope therefore that this book will be of value to doctors who want a succinct text which provides the information they need in order to make some of the clinical decisions that will face them in the event of an H5N1 pandemic.
Medical and Professional Bodies
We urge the Royal Colleges/Royal Societies in the UK - and the equivalent bodies throughout Europe, the USA, Asia and Australia - to take the initiative in making available to mainstream medics information about scientifically-robust natural health approaches so that they can appropriately incorporate them into their treatment strategies.
There are of course legal issues - we urge that these are addressed as soon as possible to ensure that 'all that can be done is done' in a timely fashion.
As does the Alliance for Natural Health, we urge that national pandemic preparedness plans are revised to accommodate the nutritional plans and protocols that may help in the prevention and management of an HPAI Influenza A pandemic.
